In class this week we discussed what my students imagined their working life to be like (which will in their case start in about 1,5 years, give or take 😉 ) and we kind of slipped into a conversation about where they see themselves in some years.

First of all, I was really happy because they freely engaged in this conversation and opened up in what seemed to be a carefree way. It obviously was a topic that stirred them up (usually they are rather quiet and having them have a discussion can be extremely frustrating to me) and I very much enjoyed their thoughts and ideas. Plus, I hardly moderated the lesson, they ran it themselves. It made me proud! Applause to them.

Secondly, I was a bit surprised because in the course of this lesson a rather timid student asked me politely if he could ask me a rather personal question: what I had dreamed about when I was 18 and where I saw myself ten years from then. His boldness surprised me, as did his question.

It was an interesting journey of the mind, to try to remember the dreams of my 18-year-old self – and where she saw herself at 28.
It was even harder to imagine this past she had envisioned knowing what actually came.

However, it is a question and lesson to remember. 🙂 Needless to say, I do love my job.
